Makeup is a means of scenic expression.  It is the way to impersonate a character, in a plastic form, with cosmetics, clays or pigments.  Makeup is as old as the need for clothing.

There are records that makeup was made with natural pigments, as a mimetism option, transformation or characterization.  Even makeup has been a way to social hierarchy among many cultures in the World.

We can divide makeup into three important ways.  The first will be the expression channel, the religious, where cultures and other religions used makeup as an important element to be close to their God or divinity, being this an important part of their wardrobe in order to be presented dignified at rituals or a religious place.  A clear example of the World is the Shaman or the Guru of some African cultures, American or Australian.

Other form of expression is the cultural.  The adequacy of art elements and makeup to belong to determined nuclei of society.  We can use African tribes as an example, Neo Zealanders and Australians who conserve makeup, tattoos, lacerations or skin and body deformities by tradition; such as the habitants of Nigeria, women of Kenya or Zaire, or la Maoris from New Zealand among others. 
Examples of social transformation through makeup are the Eunuchs, who must transform or characterize their body and faces to belong to a select group of society.  The Punks or Darks would be another social manifestation, through their hairdos, makeup, earrings or tattoos, belongs to a specific sector.  Social Makeup is form of culture expression; it is common and indispensable for the sectorization of some nuclei.  
At last we have the artistic manifest, which fusions religious and cultural. It is the representation and expression of social ways of life.  Dances exist and divinity theatrical plays, as a cultural manifest for all social gatherings.  We can mention example from all over the world such as:  the Kathacali Theater, the Australian Aborigines rituals, the Peking opera, the Kabuli Theater, the Huicholes rituals, the Papua bird men and the Maoris tribal dances, among others. This form of expression fuses all variants of makeup, being the mime to get closer to a God or esthetic cannon to be integrated into a social nuclei or the way to characterization and artistic and scenic expression. This   good enters the theatrical makeup; it is the method and the techniques of plastic representation to make any scenic executioner a character.
